Description
Srikakulam a district of Andhra Pradesh is famous for its cotton cultivation and hand spun cotton yarn, which is commonly known as punduru khadi. Ponduru is truly a spinning and weaving town with looms in the houses of the Pattushali, Sali and Devangi communities. Women from the Pattushali community have all the traditional items necessary for ginning (separating the cotton from seed), carding, slivering and spinning into fine yarn.
Srikakulam known for its mid staple cotton where western part of India know for its short staple and West Bengal known for its long staple hand spun fine cotton yarn.
Mid staple cotton can make a fine balance between sophisticate and breath ability. Hence, it is famous.Â
The following saree is an example of mid staple cotton from Srikakulam but loomed it in Bengal under the supervision of master weaver Rajkumar Basak from Fulia.
